[...] The “Safety of the children” I know it can be hard for people who haven’t met well-bred and well taken care of APBTs, but it’s the truth: Pit Bulls are great with children. They are not inherently dangerous. The idea that these dogs will break out of their kennels, jump the fence, run across a field, go straight to the school, and attack children playing outside is just ludicrous. As soon as people mention “But think of the children!” we forget reason, and agree that whatever that person said must be true. Especially if they are nuns. I know there are lots of news articles about pit bulls attacking children, but it is the incidents that need to be examined. Neglected dogs, unattended children, food or toys involved, etc. are the causes. And these causes certainly are not breed specific. I won’t go into this further here, but you can see more of my thought on this subject here. [...]

Hi! This article is one of the best I have read in a long time. I speak from experience and people can love it or hate it. I was raised with pit bulls. I own two now myself as an adult. I have a 9 year old, a 6 year old, and an 18 month old child. (All boys at that! :>) What people fail to mention is that the pit bull scored in the 80's on the temperment test verus a lab, golden retriever, etc all who scored in the low to mid 70's. The APBT is a breed that is so eager to learn and please that it is amazing. One of the APBT that we had when I was a child ( the dog is now 80 years old!!!) was so intelligent that the trainer said he was smart to the point of being able to reason. You will not find that in another breed. They are special, loving, family dogs. My two would bend over backwards for my family. They would never let any harm come to us. Both of my pits are in the house along with my minature weenie dog.
I'm glad to see that there may be some hope for this breed with educated people like you rooting for them. People have no right to go off of what the media sells. I live close to Nashville, TN and on the news they were sensationalizing a pit bull attack. Come to find out the dog wasn't even a fourth of a pit, had no pit in its bloodline whatsoever!!! An investigator called the news station and asked them if they were going to recant their story since the dog was not a pit. They replied, "NO! The story has already aired and pit bull attacks sell!!!!!" People need to think about that before they judge. And if they haven't had any experience with the breed at all, they shouldn't talk with only heresay to back them up.

Unfortunately, many rescue organizations are not very helpful to the people trying to give good homes to animals. Many charge outrageous adoption fees to either make up for taking on high risk or just too many animals. I also believe that they are trying to weed out anyone who isn't rolling in the cash. We've had several not-so-great experiences trying to take our current dog to meet dogs at a rescue. The places are not well-equipped to handle this sort of situation, and yet amazingly they require it. Many require a 6ft fence and will not consider any adoptee without one, regardless of breed.
Myself and others have been ignored after filling out lengthy applications--some of which I had to actually do research to be able to fill out. I was thrilled with our first rescue experience in Indiana, but have not had any luck finding a rescue in the Cincinnati area that isn't run by crazy people.

GREAT JOB!!!

Hate is a very strong thing and humans seem to be addicted to it. Why I wonder do people type "pit bull" in google if they know they don't like them? Beavis is one of millions that spew their hate and lack of experience on the rest of the world. Every person I have ever spoke with that felt that "pit bulls" were aggressive dogs have never had hands on experience with the breed. When showed pictures they have said that mastiffs were APBT's they had met and had pet my dogs who are both APBT's without knowing that is what they were. Ignorance is easy for people spreading the opinions of someone else is far easier than developing your own (sarcasm). There are so many "new" designer mutts out there who BYB's are trying to pass off as APBT or Am Staffs that you could not identify a bandog from a mastiff and most people would call these dogs "pit bulls". Just because someone labels me white does not mean I am white it's the mear color of my skin I am Irish. Most people think the Irish are drunks a stereotype I am not a drinker. Just because a dog looks like a "pit bull" APBT does not make it one. Mastiffs are large dogs who are protective of their owners and property if they were as cheap to buy as the APBT they would be next on the dangerous dog list you could bet your pay check on it. What it all boils down to is education and the will to learn and keep an open mind without jumping on the ban wagon of someone else's opinion. RESEARCH!! Get hands on!! You can go to a rescue or shelter near you and meet some lost soul who would gladly shower you with kisses despite the reason they are there.

Thanks again for a great post! BULLY LOVE
